Friday, 1st November, 2024 – Uploaded my diary for October to my website because I didn’t want to have to wait for another two months before sharing my experiences with other people.
Watched the men collecting the rubbish. They mixed the paper up with the plastic. So much for the trouble I went to to keep them separate all these years!
Ordered a new mobile phone because I lost the old one. Bought a new pair of black waterproof overtrousers because my old ones are worn out. While I was trying on the overtrousers, I fell heavily on my back and was in pain much of the time for the rest of the day.
Sunday, 3rd November – Received an email pointing out a mistake in my website.
Monday, 4th November – The television stopped working in the middle of a programme, and the washing machine stopped working between the washing and the drying. Went to see a doctor about my back. He said that it should get better in two or three weeks’ time. When I saw him, the pain disappeared, but it came back again after I left. When I got home I couldn’t get the internet or emails. Then, a lot of other things stopped working, including the telephone, the computer and the bedside light.
Tuesday, 5th November – Got the telephone numbers of a number of electricians from the library, and the first one I tried called and got everything working including the telephone.
Wednesday, 6th November – Collected the new mobile phone. When I tried it out I could phone from the mobile to the land line, but not the other way round.
Sunday, 10th November – Watched a television programme that was able to prove that the two princes in the tower were not murdered by Richard III as was generally believed.
Tuesday, 12th November – At last, my back seems to be starting to get better.
Sent an email to Jolyon Jesty asking how I can consult the Jesty family tree, as the method I have used in the past doesn’t work now.
Wednesday, 13th November – Listened to a very interesting radio programme about Carl Sagan. I remember enjoying his television programmes before I had a video cassette recorder. Why haven’t these programmes been broadcast since?
Saturday, 16th November – Chris called with some books and calendars for me to sign. He helped me with various things in connection with my computer. In particular he enabled me back up the text in such a way that I no longer have to copy it all every week because this is now done automatically.
Sunday, 17th November – My back is completely better now. The doctor got it right.
Went to an Afternoon with Chris Butterfield and the singer Johnny Campbell in the Victoria Hall in Settle.
Tuesday, 19th November – Tried to reply to a Facebook message from Lorena Linke, but I couldn’t, so I replied to Chris Butterfield’s reply to that message.
Thursday, 21st November – Found an eight-colour Ordnance Survey map of Bedlars Green in the internet. It showed as much detail as a 25″ map, but the lettering wasn’t legible.
The temperature recorded on the computer was -5° C at 10.0 a.m.
Watched a television programme about fungi that was the best programme on the subject that I have ever seen.
Friday, 22nd November – Tried to renew a library book by telephone, but I couldn’t make sense of the recorded messages, so I took the book to the library. Then I tried to get from the Market Place to the shop where I bought my camera, but I found myself back in the Market Place. Then I tried to approach the area from the north, and somebody showed me where to go, but I still ended up in the marketplace. Then I gave up. Later, the electrician called and got the sitting-room ceiling light to work. He said that I should get no more trouble with the light if I use LED bulbs, so I ordered some from Amazon.
Saturday, 23rd November – Received four forty-watt LED bulbs twenty-four hours from when I ordered them. According to the labels, they are expected to last for fifteen years. Read in the internet that I can get brighter ones.
Monday, 25th November – Phoned Robinson’s because I can’t record television programmes although I can record radio programmes, and they told me what to do about this. How useful it is to know people who understand things like this!
Tuesday, 26th November – Found the camera shop in its new premises in the main street and bought a connector which I hope will enable me to copy photographs directly from the camera to the Wainwright Facebook site.
Wednesday, 27th November – Ordered two 150-watt LED bulbs. Received an email inviting me to take part in an interview in Kendal. Noticed for the first time that all the photographs in my camera have numbers so that I can find them easily. The highest number is 257.
Thursday, 28th November – Chris called and showed me how to use the connector that I bought recently. He said that he could cure the damp in my exterior walls and enable me to store my collection of scenes from television on a computer so that they will last longer. After he had gone, I tried to upload the photograph of a hedgehog, which was number 59, but that number was missing from the list. The photograph was taken on 11th April 2023, and I found two photographs bearing that date, but neither of them was the photograph that I was looking for.
Received the bulbs I ordered.
